Suspicious WhatsApp messages

Alert message sent 13/01/2022 14:11:00

Information sent on behalf of Neighbourhood Watch

This is a message from Wycombe District Neighbourhood Watch Association.

Due to an increasing pattern of scams via WhatsApp, we thought the story below from a NHW supporter was worth passing on to you as it is typical of many similar scams at the present time:

“I received a WhatsApp message from someone I believed to be my son.  He said that he had put his mobile phone in the washing machine, so he was using another phone for the time being.  However, he couldn’t make calls.  It all seemed pretty genuine to start off with, then the message went on to say that he had to pay a bill, but the bank had blocked his account because of changing the number.  I thought this was pretty normal, but the amount was for £3,000.  He said he would pay me back as the money was in his savings account.  Alarm bells started to ring!  I then received a phone call from a number I didn’t recognise and declined the call.  I phoned my son on his normal number and he told me that the WhatsApp message wasn’t from him at all.  It all seemed rather genuine at the time and I could have so easily fallen for the scam.”

Take care if you receive anything broadly similar to this.
