Would you like a local NHW Association?

Alert message sent 12/04/2021 10:53:00

Information sent on behalf of Neighbourhood Watch

Dear Members
As we are approaching the AGM of Thames Valley Neighbourhood Watch Association (TVNHWA), I thought this is an opportune moment to remind everyone of our organisational structure. Please don’t stop reading at this point! I know that few of you will be particularly interested in such matters, but they do have an impact on your democratic rights to influence what NHW does in your area – so please bear with me for a minute or two.

Under the Constitution of TVNHWA, each Local Policing Area (there are 12 LPAs that make up Thames Valley Force Area) is entitled to send one NHW representative to the Thames Valley Executive Committee. Our LPA is Chiltern & South Bucks, and, as things stand, I am your representative. However, in what could be seen as a more democratic process, in several LPAs members have set up an independent local NHW Association. The Association then chooses a representative – usually the local Chair – to join the Committee.

In Chiltern & South Bucks LPA, I was asked by the Committee to join them, as the most experienced Multi-Scheme Administrator in the area. I have been fulfilling that role in Chiltern area for some 3 years, and in South Bucks for 9 months or so. While I am very committed to the work of NHW, and dedicate a great deal of time to it, I have no interest at all in setting up a local Association. I dislike bureaucracy, and, as I enter my 80th year I have no appetite for the distractions that would inevitably arise during its creation.

However, if any NHW members living in the Chiltern & South Bucks LPA area wish to set up a local Association, organising everything from a Constitution to electing Officers and a Committee, I would be only too happy to support it. I am a great believer in democracy, and I am also very keen on succession-planning! I would love to be able to step down before long, leaving the local area in safe hands!

So, if you are interested in setting up a Chiltern & South Bucks NHW  Association, please contact me. I will share the contact details of all those who respond, so that a working group can be created as a first step. Incidentally, there is helpful guidance on setting up Associations on the ourwatch.org.uk website, and other local Association Chairs would be happy to give advice.

Kind  regards

David
