School Safeguarding Scam

Alert message sent 26/07/2022 16:31:00

Information sent on behalf of Neighbourhood Watch

The following information has been provided by one of our co-ordinators.

Every scam is an innovation and the latest involving "Stay Safe Books for Schools" first started circulating in early July.  This scam is very much aimed at businesses, but individuals have been targeted as well.  A well briefed caller cold calls about the Stay Safe Books for Schools as a follow up to a previous call several months ago.  There was, of course, no previous call where you agreed to sponsor this initiative.

The caller goes on to explain the scheme and asks you to nominate a school and, if you have no preference, offers a local one to support.  Then comes the "we'll send you an invoice" and, in the case of our informant, this was £289, but other amounts are often quoted such as £249 or £199.  At this point they are looking for contact e-mail and, no doubt, if you continued the call, personal and bank details for the payment.  The school mentioned is likely genuine but would not receive the books or funds.  It is scam that plays on goodwill as most of us would expect "Stay Safe Books for Schools" to be a very worthwhile cause.  It may be, but not by agreeing to pay through this well organised and presented scam.
