WILDLIFE CRIME – POLICE SCOTLAND

INFORMATION BULLETIN - THEFT OF GAME BIRDS:


A large proportion of the partridge and pheasant released to be shot in the UK, are imported from France as eggs or young chicks (poults), but due to Avian Influenza, very few will be available for import this year.

Prior to being released for the shooting season in July, poults are put in pens before being fully released. These pens are also vulnerable to thefts due to being in rural locations - woodland clearings for pheasants and open ground for partridge.

This scarcity is driving up both demand and value, which will likely result in an increase in thefts.  Game farms stock thousands of chicks and have previously been targeted, with one location in East Lothian, being targeting on at least 6 occasions in June 2019, with about 500 partridge poults stolen each time.

HARE COURSING:

5/6/2022  Crown Plaza, Marlow.  Report of hare coursing whereby 8 males were seen with terrier type dogs. The local gamekeeper and one other (they were known to each other) reported this.  The belief was that the persons may be parked in the Crowne Plaza and have headed out from there. The ARV has attended and been unable to locate persons out and about or in the hotel car park.

5/6/2022  Chalfont St. Peter.  A member of the public has found 4 dead deer and mauled hares on the footpath at the above location 05/06, they looked recently killed.

5/6/2022  Gerrards Cross Golf Club.  4 dead adult hares have been found at the entrance to the golf club; a couple of people has called this in.

THEFTS FROM BEAUTY SPOTS:

7/6/2022  White Horse Hill Car Park, Uffington.  The aggrieveds were travelling through to London and decide to stop for a break at the National Trust Car Park at the above location. They have left the vehicle to take some photographs and on their return have found the windows smashed and a significant number of items taken from within.

7/6/2022  Bury Downs, The Ridgeway Car Park, Bury Lane, Newbury.  At around 06:41 the aggrieved stopped for a break whilst travelling away for a holiday, on the return to their car they have also had their holiday belongings stolen at significant cost.

THEFT / CRIMINAL DAMAGE:

Ferndale Shotacre Lane, Princess Risborough.  A horse has been found by its owner to be genitally mutilated. The vet who has examine the horse says that this has been done intentionally. There was an issue with this type of offence in Princes Risborough around 30 years previously, where chestnut and white horses were targeted and the mare in this instance is chestnut and white.

23/5/2022  Red Shute Hill, Thatcham.  A white Mercedes van has been reported as stealing pallets from a yard. The aggrieved has taken images of the vehicle and person involved. The vehicle is very active from the M4 and below, nothing really above this corridor but vehicle is in heavy use and often on TVP area.  Similar incident was reported last year.

HERITAGE CRIME:

10/5 – 13/5/2022  Donnington Castle.  A padlocked gate to the tower has been forced open and damage has been caused to the gate. In a further incident, a couple of days previously the gatehouse was broken into and the castle had initial scratched into it.

3/6 – 6/6/2022  Church of the Holy Rood, Wantage.  The church has a stained glass window smashed near the altar (stone in situ) and some tiles dislodged from the roof. Thought this may have happened over the course of the Jubilee Celebrations.

OP YELLOW:

2/6/2022 – 6/6/2022  Farmhouse, Milton.  The GPS dome has been stolen from a tractor, located within a barn (no forced entry) We have now had a number of these offences but none previously in Oxfordshire so the offenders are moving across LPA s. This has been flagged for CSI as we have obtained footwear marks from their previous attendance at these scenes and CSIS HATT has written a forensic strategy for these offence types. Please be aware that CSI are attending these offences where viable. The dome has a serial number that has been added to PNC and has been deactivated.

7/6 – 8/6Farm, Main Road, South Dagnal.  A John Deere GPS dome has been stolen from the top of a tractor at the farm. The aggrieved does not have the  serial number or tracking data, so at this time no action has been able to be taken in terms of logging the theft with PNC / John Deere. CSI have been flagged and will be attending.
