Hi Resident,
Residents across the Thames Valley are being urged to remember four key messages this Autumn and Winter: Lock it. Light it. Hide it. Report it.
As daylight hours reduce and more people spend time away from home during weekends and the festive season, opportunities for burglars can increase. However, simple crime prevention measures can make a significant difference in reducing the risk of becoming a victim of burglary.
Matthew Barber said: “As the clocks go back this weekend and the evenings become darker, the police will be proactively tackling burglary but there are a few simple steps we can all take to reduce our own risk of becoming a victim of burglary.
“Burglary remains low in Thames Valley; but every crime can have a devastating impact on families. Beyond the loss of property, it can leave people feeling unsafe in their own homes and communities, which is why preventing burglary and bringing offenders to justice remains a priority.
“Through targeted enforcement activity, neighbourhood policing and proactive crime prevention work, the force remains focused on identifying offenders, disrupting criminal activity and protecting local communities.
“If you are a victim of burglary or any other crime, please report it to Thames Valley Police. You can also access free, confidential advice and support through my Victims First service.
“Together, by taking sensible precautions and reporting suspicious activity, we can help protect our homes and keep communities safe this Autumn and Winter.”
Superintendent John Batty from Thames Valley Police said: “We understand that being burgled can be a traumatic experience.
“Many burglaries are carried out by opportunist thieves who get in through an open door or window and take their chance.
“We recommend taking steps to ensure your property is secure, we have a handy guide to help you through this.
“We are carrying out activity to deter offenders and ensure those responsible for crimes committed are identified and dealt with.”
By taking a few practical precautions, you can help deter offenders and protect your property from becoming a target:
Leave lights on when you’re not home to make it appear occupied Maintain your gardens so there’s no cover for a burglar to hide Ensure garages, sheds and other outbuildings are securely locked Cancel any regular deliveries if you are heading away Install outdoor sockets for any festive lighting, where possible Avoid leaving packaging from expensive gifts visible outside your home
If you notice any suspicious activity in your neighbourhood, please report it to Thames Valley Police by calling 101 or through the online reporting platform. Always dial 999 in an emergency.
