Dogs and hot weather

HOT WEATHER AND OUR DOGS!

Many people think it is ok to leave their dog in the car if they're parked in the shade or the windows are open, but a car can become as hot as an oven, even when the weather doesn't feel that warm. 
When it's 22 degrees Celsius outside, the car could reach an unbearable 47 degrees within an hour. 

 It can be very dangerous and will cause your dog suffering and harm 

ADVICE FROM THE RSPCA INCLUDES:

1. Try and assess the dogs condition, if they're showing signs of heatstroke dial 999 https://orlo.uk/Kgda0
2. If at a shop, venue or event, ask the staff to alert the owner over a loudspeaker 

3. You can call the RSPCA cruelty line for advice on 03001234999, but if the dog is in danger dialling 999 should be your first step.

Dogs are 10 times more likely to suffer heat-related illnesses from exercising in hot weather than from overheating in cars. Walking advice includes:
1. Walk early morning or late evening when temperature has cooled 

2. Try and keep to shady areas/woods etc 

3. Carry water for the walk 

4. Check the pavement temperature with the back of your hand to avoid burned paws. Try to stick to grassy areas. 

5. STOP walking if dog shows any signs of heatstroke, heavy panting & difficulty breathing, excessive drooling, drowsy or uncoordinated, collapsed or vomiting.
