Keep your home looking lived-in Use timers on lights, leave a radio or TV on when you’re out, and don’t let post pile up. An occupied-looking house is far less tempting.
Hide the valuables Keep handbags, laptops, car keys and wallets out of sight from windows and doors. Don’t advertise what’s inside.
Consider CCTV or doorbell cameras Visible cameras can deter burglars and give you footage if something happens. Aim them at entry points like driveways, porches and back gates.
Don’t leave spare keys outside Burglars know all the classic hiding spots — plant pots, window ledges, meter boxes. Give a spare to a trusted neighbour instead.
Upgrade your security Fit good quality deadlocks, window locks, and anti-snap cylinders on UPVC doors. Reinforce gates and install sturdy hasps and padlocks on sheds.
Set your alarm! Even if you're only going out for a short time.
Keep the outside tidy Cut back hedges and bushes, especially around doors and windows. Burglars love somewhere to hide.
Light it up Use motion-activated lights on driveways, side paths and back gardens. Sudden light is a big deterrent.
Know your neighbours Good communication is underrated. Neighbours spotting something odd is often what stops crimes from progressing.
Report suspicious activity If something doesn’t look right, trust your gut. Call it in. Even small details can help identify offenders.
