Following incidents of disorder and reports of fights with weapons at the Banbury Michaelmas Fair last night (17/10), a Section 60 stop and search order has been enacted, covering the town centre overnight. The order is in place from 1.30pm today (18/1) until 12.01am tomorrow morning (19/10), covering the areas shown in the shaded area on the map. The order incorporates the following areas: Warwick Road between the junctions of Southam Road and Bath Road B4035 Broughton Road between Bath Road and Beargarden Road A361 Bloxham Road between Beargarden Road and Oxford Road Oxford Road between Bloxham Road and Upper Windsor Street A4260 Upper Windsor Street between Oxford Road and the junction with Cherwell Drive Castle Street to Warwick Road. Two 19-year-old men, both from Banbury, were arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and currently remain in police custody. One of the men was also arrested on suspicion of possession of a knife blade/sharp pointed article in a public place. A third person, a 15-year-old boy, was also arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon in a public place. He has been released on police bail. All of the weapons have been seized. Inspector Matt Fishwick said: “Following disorder in the town, we have taken a decision to enact a Section 60 stop and search order for the area shown on the map. “These powers are in place to prevent a reoccurrence of the incidents that occurred overnight. “We have already made arrests and this order will give our officers extra powers to carry out stop and search activity in a defined area. “These are emergency powers and the threshold to implement them is high; however we are using them to keep our community safe. “You will see more police officers in the area while the order is in place, and we expect to carry out more stop and searches than usual. “If you are stopped by an officer, please do not be worried, as this does not mean you are in trouble. “Similarly, if you are in the area enjoying the fair, and have any concerns or wish to report anything, you can speak to any of our officers who will be out on patrol through the evening.”
