Attempt car theft

We are appealing for witnesses following an attempted car theft that occurred around 3:00am on Thursday, 3 July 2025, in the Ellis Lane / Evans Way area.

It is believed that individuals were attempting to clone a car key by scanning a nearby house. However, they are suspected to have been targeting the wrong property. Their persistent interference with the vehicle triggered the car alarm, at which point the suspects fled the scene.

They then made off in a separate vehicle that had been parked nearby on Burrows Crescent, before driving off at speed towards Burford Road.

If you were in the area at the time and saw or heard anything suspicious—or have doorbell camera, CCTV, or dashcam footage from that time—please get in touch. Even seemingly minor details could assist with our enquiries.

Contact police on 101, quoting reference 43250331203

Car thieves are increasingly using key cloning technology to gain access to vehicles without needing to physically steal the keys. Here's how you can help protect your vehicle and your neighbourhood:

 Key Cloning Prevention
  • Use a Faraday pouch or signal-blocking box to store your key fob when not in use. This prevents thieves from capturing its signal.
  • Keep keys away from doors and windows – avoid leaving them in sight or near entry points.
  •  Vehicle Security
  • Use a steering wheel lock or wheel clamp as a visible deterrent.
  • Install an aftermarket immobiliser or tracking device.
  • Ensure your car’s software and security updates are up to date.
  •  Surveillance
  • Fit a CCTV system or doorbell camera to monitor your driveway or street.
  •  Community Action
  • Join or start a Neighbourhood Watch scheme.
  • Keep an eye out for each other’s property—report suspicious activity.
  • Share security tips and updates with neighbours.
  • Your vigilance makes a difference. Together, we can help prevent crime and keep our community safe.
