On Saturday 22nd March between 9-9:30pm, police received reports regarding a group of youths seen setting off fireworks in the public play area opposite the COOP in Milton Under Wychwood. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of the public and particularly the children involved.
The incident occurred during the evening hours when the park was quiet, but it still posed a risk to anyone in the area. The reports stated that the youths appeared to be handling the fireworks irresponsibly, with some fireworks being discharged too close to structures like playground equipment and nearby houses.
Local authorities were alerted to the situation, but by the time officers arrived, the youths had dispersed, and no direct injuries were reported. However, the situation highlights several important health and safety concerns, as well as potential violations of laws regarding the use of fireworks in public spaces. Health and Safety Dangers: Regulations Regarding the Use of Fireworks: In the UK, the use of fireworks is regulated under several laws and guidelines: Under the Firework Regulations, fireworks may only be sold to individuals who are at least 18 years old. They are not to be set off between 11 pm and 7 am, except on specific occasions like New Year’s Eve, Bonfire Night, when the curfew extends to 1 am. Setting off fireworks in public spaces without the necessary permissions could result in criminal charges. The Fireworks Act and the Criminal Damage Act could come into effect if fireworks cause damage to public property or injuries to others. Public Safety Concerns: Local authorities often have specific rules regarding where fireworks can and cannot be set off. Discharging fireworks in public play areas is generally prohibited unless there is a planned, controlled display that has been authorized by the local council.
