E-Scooters & E-Bikes

Dear Resident

Thank you for completing the annual community priority survey. This survey allows us within the neighbourhood department to understand and identify what crime's are a priority in our area. This will then give us a better sense of the current issues are within Windsor.

The use of E-Scooters & E-Bikes have been highlighted as a priority concern for Windsor.

There are ongoing actions which are part of a broader initiative to address the growing concerns about the safety and legality of these vehicles.

Why Are They Dangerous?

  • High Accident Rates: The popularity of e-bikes and e-scooters has surged, leading to a significant increase in accidents. Riders often face risks such as head injuries, broken bones, and internal injuries

  • Speed and Control Issues: E-bikes and e-scooters can reach high speeds, making them difficult to control, especially for inexperienced riders. Their small wheels and twitchy handling further increase the risk of accidents

  • Lack of Safety Gear: Many riders do not wear helmets or other protective gear, increasing the severity of injuries in accidents.

  • Why Are They Illegal?

  • Regulatory Non-Compliance: In many regions, e-bikes and e-scooters must meet specific requirements to be legal. For instance, in the UK, e-bikes must have motors under 250 watts and be pedal-assisted. E-scooters are often restricted to private land use only

  • Unlicensed and Unregistered Use: High-powered e-bikes and e-scooters often fall outside the legal definitions of bicycles and require proper registration and licensing. Many users, especially teens, are unaware of these requirements, leading to illegal use on public roads

  • Public Safety Concerns: The illegal use of these vehicles on sidewalks and roads poses a danger to pedestrians and other road users. Police actions aim to mitigate these risks and ensure public safety.

  • By understanding the dangers and legal requirements, we can promote safer and more responsible use of electric scooters and bikes. Always check local regulations and ensure your vehicle complies with the law to avoid fines and confiscations. Stay safe and ride responsibly!
