Community Alert: Burglary Prevention Advice

I’d like to take this opportunity to share some important tips to help you protect your home and property from burglary. Unfortunately, burglars are always looking for opportunities, but there are several steps you can take to reduce the risk.

  • Lock Up Properly: Always ensure all doors and windows are securely locked when leaving your home, even if you're just stepping out for a short time. Double-check all access points, including side gates, sheds, and garages.
  • Use Timed Lights: Set up timers for your indoor lights to create the illusion that someone is home, especially if you’re away on holiday. This simple step can act as a deterrent.
  • Don’t Share Your Plans Publicly: Avoid posting about your upcoming holidays or trips on social media. Burglars often monitor online activity to identify empty homes.
  • Secure Your Valuables: Keep expensive items like jewellery, electronics, and car keys out of sight from windows. Consider using a safe for valuable items.
  • Install Security Measures: Consider installing a burglar alarm, CCTV cameras, or motion-sensor lights outside your home. A visible security system can discourage potential burglars from targeting your property.
  • Be Mindful of Spare Keys: Never hide spare keys in obvious places like under mats or flowerpots. If you must leave a key with a neighbour, choose someone you trust.
  • Get to Know Your Neighbours: Building a good relationship with your neighbours can create a strong neighbourhood watch. Neighbours who are familiar with each other are more likely to notice suspicious behaviour and alert you or the authorities.
  • Report Suspicious Activity: If you see anyone acting suspiciously in your neighbourhood, report it to the police immediately. The quicker we know, the quicker we can respond to potential threats.
  • Remember, prevention is always better than dealing with the consequences of a break-in. By taking a few simple steps, you can make your home less attractive to burglars.
