Stay Safe from Phone Scams !

Dear Residents,

As your local Police Community Support Officer (PCSO), I am writing to address a rising concern that has been affecting many in our community: scam phone calls. These fraudulent calls can be distressing and, in some cases, financially devastating. Here’s how to recognize these scams and protect yourself.

What Are Scam Phone Calls?

Scammers often pretend to be from trusted organizations, such as:

  • Banks claiming suspicious activity on your account.
  • Police warning you of legal issues.
  • HMRC threatening tax penalties or claiming you are owed a refund.
  • Energy providers offering discounts or threatening disconnections.
  • Family members in distress, asking for urgent financial help.
  • These scammers aim to trick you into providing personal details, passwords, or making payments.

How to Spot a Scam Call
  • Unexpected Contact: Legitimate organizations rarely call you out of the blue.
  • Pressure Tactics: Scammers create urgency, saying your money or safety is at risk.
  • Request for Personal Details: Be cautious if they ask for sensitive information like your PIN, passwords, or bank details.
  • Unprofessional Behaviour: Listen for poor grammar, fake-sounding names, or background noise.
  • Payment Requests: Be wary of calls requesting bank transfers, gift cards, or cryptocurrency payments.

  • How to Deal with Scam Calls
  • Stay Calm: Don’t be intimidated by threats or urgency.
  • Hang Up Immediately: You are not obligated to continue the call.
  • Do Not Share Information: Never disclose personal, banking, or security details.
  • Verify the Caller: If the caller claims to be from a known organization, hang up and call them back using an official number from their website.
  • Enable Call Blocking: Use services like caller ID or blocking features to screen unwanted calls.
  • Report the Call: Inform Action Fraud at 0300 123 2040 or via their website. If the scam threatens immediate danger, dial 999.

  • Protecting Vulnerable Loved Ones
  • Educate elderly family members or those who might be more vulnerable to scams.
  • Consider installing call-blocking devices for them.
  • Remind them that trusted organizations will never pressure them over the phone.

  • What If You’ve Been Scammed?
  • Contact Your Bank Immediately: They may be able to stop the transaction.
  • Report the Incident to Action Fraud: This helps authorities track down scammers.
  • Change Passwords and Secure Accounts: If you shared sensitive details, act quickly to protect your accounts.

  • Were always here to help !
