Crime Prevention - Faraday Pouches An increasing number of modern cars have technological features such as keyless entry / keyless ignition, as automotive technology advances, so does the technology that the criminals can use to steal cars. It would be advisable to park in a well-lit area, preferably covered by CCTV. Keyless Car Theft happens when thieves are only within a few metres from your car keys to capture the signal. Keyless car theft can take only 20-30 seconds.
Faraday pouches can stop access to your vehicle by blocking your car key fob from transmitting its code to the vehicle, as the pouches are lined with layers of metallic material.
Keyless Car Theft – How It Works
Step 1 – The device transmits the signal to somebody else standing by the victim’s car. Step 2– This then fools the car into thinking the key is near it, and so it allows the doors to be opened and ignition to be started.
A simple device, called a Faraday pouch, is available commercially for you to put your keys in when they are not in use. Keep all keys away from doors and windows and ideally centrally in the house, in a drawer or cupboard. Leave vehicles in gear with steering locks on and additional security if you have it, such as deadlocks, etc.
