Street Safe Survey - Identified locations in Newbury

In June last year, West Berkshire Council commissioned a street safe survey with a view to understand if feeling unsafe is a bigger problem in certain public spaces, and is likely to affect some groups more than others. A number of locations were identified by the community and the local violence against women and girls partnership group have started work on some of the identified locations. The first two locations the partnership focused on were:

  • Subways along the A339, Newbury
  • Victoria Park, Newbury
  •

The partnership including representatives from the local neighbourhood policing team carried out an environmental audit of the subways, identifying issues with faulty lighting, graffiti, litter and broken view mirrors. These matters have been highlighted to the highways and structures team within West Berkshire Council who have confirmed that the subways are routinely cleaned, faulty lighting has been flagged for review and repair, broken mirrors to be replaced and consideration for further mirrors to be installed in the scheduled programme of work starting in the next financial year on 1st April.

Victoria Park has previously been awarded the Green Flag award status. The Green Flag Award scheme recognises and rewards well managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of recreational outdoor spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world. The local neighbourhood policing team have conducted a green flag community self-assessment of Victoria Park and have concluded that the location would still meet the award criteria for Green Flag status.
