Information sent on behalf of Thames Valley Police

Offensive Weapons Act 2019 – MARS action and lever release

If you possess one of the above types of firearm or relevant component parts, please read on, otherwise, please disregard.

On 10th December 2020 the Home Office surrender and compensation scheme goes live and will be in effect until 9th March 2021.  During that time, if you possess a MARS action or lever release firearm, ancillary equipment specific to those firearms, or bump stocks, you must engage with the process during the period of the scheme.

If you do not engage, you will not be eligible to claim compensation, and if you retain possession of this type of firearm or any component part after 9th March you will be committing an offence, for which you may be prosecuted and risk having your certificate revoked.

During the scheme we will be carrying out visits to collect relevant firearms and component parts which, after the end of the scheme, become prohibited weapons. We will also complete the compensation claim form with you, which we will then forward to the Home Office.

If you possess one or more of these types of firearm, please email us at firearmslicensing@thamesvalley.pnn.police.uk, making the Subject of the email “Offensive Weapons surrender” and provide your full name, contact number, certificate number and the make, type, calibre and serial number of the firearm/s and ancillary equipment that are to be surrendered.  We will then contact you to make an appointment to visit and complete the process.  Please do not attend a police station of your own accord, but wait for us to carry out our visit.

I would ask you to engage with this process as soon as possible, in order that we can ensure that the collection of firearms and compensation forms is completed before the scheme ends on 9th March.

I have included the Home Office Guidance on the surrender, the values list and the compensation form, which may provide you with further clarity on this surrender scheme.

I look forward to helping to make this process as easy as possible for you and thank you for your cooperation and understanding in this matter.
